Ethiopia has identified about 60,000 migrants who fled to Sudan from the regional state of Tigray and will soon begin their repatriation, according to the Agency for Refugee and Returnee Affairs (ARRA).
During the police raid against the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) on November, over two million Ethiopians were displaced, including tens of thousands who entered the Sudanese territory, according to domestic and international organizations.
Lots of families left their homes, some forced by the TPLF, and remain illegal in the neighboring country, but such a reality will change gradually in coming weeks, Tesfahun Gobezay, ARRA´s director general, said.
The ARRA, added Gobezay, which will guarantee compliance with health protocols, manages the return of all migrants, in collaboration with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the UN High Commissioner for Refugees.
On January, UN representatives visited the May Aini and Adi Harush camps, located close to the border with Eritrea and Sudan, where thousands of people fleeing the armed conflict and needing humanitarian aid also arrived.
