‘African Mother Theresa’ laid to rest

The legend and philanthropist Abebech Gobena, who passed away last Sunday in Addis Ababa, was laid to rest yesterday at Holy Trinity Church.

Families of Abebech Gobena, friends and high ranking government officials expressed their deep condolences over the passing away of the renowned Ethiopian humanitarian Abebech Gobena.

Many call Abebech Gobena as the ‘African Mother Teresa.’

“Abebech Gobena has helped thousands of orphaned children and people in need,” said Adanech Abebie Deputy Mayor of Addis Ababa City Administration. She has been reason for thousands of people to live who lost their hope, spent her whole life supporting the disadvantaged people and she is an Ethiopian and African Mother Theresa, Adanech said.

Expressing his condolence, Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed said that the philanthropist Abebech Gobena had been Ethiopia’s icon of compassion. The Prime Minister further expressed heartfelt condolences to the family, friends and the many whose lives have been impacted by her. Ethiopia’s renowned humanitarian and the founder and manager of Abebech Gobena Children’s Care and Development Association (AGOHELMA), Abebech Gobena had helped thousands of orphaned children and people in need.

The renowned Ethiopian humanitarian supporter Abebech Gobena died on Sunday contracting COVID-19. High ranking government officials attended the funeral ceremony. Abebech received an honorary doctorate degree from Jimma University for her outstanding humanitarian engagement in the last forty years. Many call Abebech Gobena as the ‘African Mother Teresa.’
