Jeffrey Filtman’s appointment as a Special Envoy is to escalate pressure on Ethiopia – Dejen Yemane, Lecturer of Political Science and International Relations at Wollo University

Bahir Dar 15 August, 2021 (AMC)-Dejen Yemane, lecturer of political science and international relations at Wollo University, said Jeffrey Filtman’s coming for the second time as U.S. Special Envoy for the Horn of Africa, is intended to escalate international pressures on Ethiopia.

Dejen said the current US government’s meddling in Ethiopia’s internal affairs and the pressure it is creating in various ways are geo-politically motivated and are related to the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD).

Dejen recalled that the US government’s pressure on Ethiopia did not start with the Biden administration, but over the Trump administration. He said the current US government’s meddling in Ethiopia’s internal affairs and the pressure on Ethiopia is due to Ethiopia’s rejection of the unjust proposal by Egypt and Sudan on the GERD.

Dejen said, Ethiopia did not accept the offer because the request from Egypt and Sudan was unfair and the agreement would foreclose its current and future legitimate rights over the utilization of the Nile. As a result, he said, the US has continued to put pressure on Ethiopia in various ways to maintain its geo-political interest, Ethiopian Press Agency reported.
