US pressing Sudanese military leaders to expand ceasefire

SKY NEWS – The US is in talks with military leaders in Sudan and pushing for them to expand a ceasefire, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken has said.

Speaking during a news conference with Kenyan foreign secretary Alfred Mutua, Mr Blinken said the US is also looking at options to return diplomats to Sudan as soon as it can.

US government personnel were evacuated from its embassy in Khartoum on Saturday, and operations were temporarily halted.

Security concerns in Khartoum mean the risk over keeping US personnel there is currently too high, Mr Blinken added.

“We continue to be in close communication with US citizens and individuals affiliated with the US government to provide assistance and to facilitate available departure routes,” Mr Blinken told the news conference.

Washington officials are continuing to “engage directly” with Sudanese military leaders General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, head of the army, and General Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, leader of the Rapid Support Forces paramilitary group.

“We also continue to engage directly… to press them to extend and expand the ceasefire,” the secretary of state said.
